How to create a strong Data Analyst portfolio

This question came from a recent 1:1 session.
Can you provide guidance on building a strong portfolio for a data analyst job application?
Focus on solving problems and not just demonstrating skills.Â
But also make sure you’re demonstrating the skills listed in the description of the jobs you’re applying to - usually SQL and Tableau or PowerBI for entry-level Data Analyst roles.
Most new folks start with a dataset and then try to create a project out of that.
However, experienced folks start with a problem or question and then find the right data to solve it.Â
But if you’re unsure what problems to solve, you can start with a dataset and think about what someone in that industry would use this data for - what questions would they ask? How can they use this data to inform business decisions?Â
Also think about how you would share your work with a stakeholder - would you create a dashboard? Summarize your insights and recommendations in a PowerPoint? Create visuals? All of the above? Create those as if you were doing paid work. Because that’s the quality of work you want to share in your portfolio.
Even for dashboards, you should create a summary of your insights.Â
When sharing or summarizing your work, think about STAR - this works for your portfolio as well as answering interview questions:
What was the situation or problem you were trying to solve?Â
What’s the task or outcome you want to deliver?Â
What were the actions you took (or methodology)?Â
What are the results? What are your insights and recommendations?Â
And the common follow-up question: What would you do differently or do next if you had more time and resources?Â
Need more help with projects?
